Opening play and Golfers 1957-1969
In June of 1959 the golf course opened and member golfers quickly established leagues and tournaments. Men’s League tee-off times were set for Thursdays, with Wednesday designated for Women’s League play. Both schedules remain the same today. Women’s tee-off times were listed in the Silver Bay News each week in the summer through 1962.
The first annual Men’s Shortstop Tournament was held at the Silver Bay Golf Course on August 22nd and 23rd, 1959. The Silver Bay News captured the activity, from the busy check-in spot to the winners.
Interesting Fact: Three Hole-in-Ones’ were reported during the decade. The Silver Bay News on June 25, 1969 reported ‘Beginner’s Luck Golf – Big Thrill’ when Paul Pearson (age 14), who only started playing that month, shot a hole-in-one (from the drive off tee into the cup) on the 9th hole (which is now hole 2). Paul’s father, Bill Pearson, shot a hole-in-one 5 years earlier on the 6th hole (currently hole 8). The Silver Bay News then reported ‘The Hole-in-One Club Expanded’ when Gene Wolfe shot his hole-in-one a month after Paul’s on the same 9th hole.
