The Silver Bay Golf and Country Club – Part 6

Besides providing a great golf course, the Silver Bay Golf and Country Club has supported their community. From off-season use of the course to hosting events throughout the years, the course has become an integral part of the community.

Off-season events we found record of:

  • The Duluth Herald announced in October 1964 that the Mariner Harriers won a cross-country event held at golf course.
  • The Lake Superior Conference Cross Country Meet was held at the course in 1989 (reported in a Mariner School Bag publication).
  • The course was a starting point for the PTSO Walkathon (‘Don’t Be A Rock, Take a Walk’) in May 2015 per the Northshore Journal.
  • In the winter of 1985, the course provided access to the Girl Scouts for cross-country skiing (see photo below).

Hosting Events
In addition to having an onsite grill available during the season for the public, the Clubhouse also hosted many banquets, luncheons, dinners, and even weddings.

In 1987, The Grill at the Clubhouse opened to the public and included breakfast on weekends.

Other events included:
And weddings:

Contributing to the future of golf in the area, golf lessons were offered and published in a 1989 Shopper: ‘Free lessons for ages 7-18’. That spirit continues today. Per the Silver Bay Country Club website: “The driving range is busy on Wednesday mornings with junior golfers learning the game. This instruction is provided free to any juniors that wish to participate.”

Fundraisers and Donations were made to the community over the years, with just a few mentioned here:

2010 – Silver Bay Women’s Golf Association donation
2011 – M Club 381 donation
2014 – After Prom Committee donation
2021 – Veterans Fundraiser

Interesting fact: The golf course season opening ad in a 1988 Shopper and the North Shore Journal from April 2011 show membership dues/ rates differences over span of 23 years.

This concludes the History of the Silver Bay Golf Course and Clubhouse series. Please send any comments, corrections or additions to the Bay Area Historical Society. Thanks for reading!
